PM Stuart Young Calls For National Unity, Defends Appointment Of Camille Robinson-Regis As AG

Stuart Young, who was officially sworn in as this country’s 8th Prime Minister on Monday, has re-emphasised the need for “national unity,” which he said holds the power to propel the nation forward.

Following his swearing-in ceremony on Monday morning, Prime Minister Young also defended his first move in the selection of Mrs. Camille Robinson-Regis as the new Attorney General – an announcement that shocked many, including the new AG.

She told reporters she felt the same way when she was approached a few days ago to serve as Attorney General.

“I was shocked when I became aware. But I am very honoured to have been given this opportunity to serve in this capacity. I will do my best.”

Responding to questions from reporters on his selection, Mr. Young defended his first move as Prime Minister, describing the new AG as the “perfect Attorney General.”

“An Attorney General has been chosen in the exercise of my discretion, and I think Ms. Camille Robinson-Regis is a perfect Attorney General for the current period.”

Mrs. Robinson-Regis recalled she had already acted in the role of Attorney General on several occasions under then Prime Minister Patrick Manning and twice under the leadership of Dr. Keith Rowley.

“Having served in the capacity as a legislator for so many years, I think, I do believe I have the capability to do it, and I’m a lawyer by trainingso I feel confident that I will bring the best to this office.”

During his swearing-in, Prime Minister Stuart Young called for national unity, noting that the sacred religious observances currently being observed of Lent, Ramadan, Phagwa, Navratri, and Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day illustrate the “spectacular expression” of T&T’s unique culture.

“I have made a call for unity and unification to all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. As I begin to talk, my purpose, my sense, what I want to achieve is for all of Trinidad and Tobago and to build Trinidad and Tobago. We have so much potential. We have a strong foundation, and I intend for us to move forward.”

And he vowed to work with each and every citizen, despite colour, creed, or race.

“I will work tirelessly with each and every single citizen who wants to be a part of this journey to create a safer, stronger, and prosperous Trinidad and Tobago. To take on crime so that everyone feels safe and secure in their own neighbourhoods.”

Prime Minister Young told members of the media it’s a privilege to hold the post.

“It’s a great honour. It’s an honour to be the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. This is an honour only seven persons have had before me, and I am taking that very seriously, especially the responsibility that I know comes along with it. I mean, apart from being honoured and a sense of great responsibility, I am really looking forward to delivering for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago in this new role and portfolio.”

Following her appointment on Monday morning, Mrs. Robinson-Regis said she will meet with former Attorney General Reginald Armour to discuss matters that are currently “on the table” as it relates to certain crime legislation.
