A Bright Start: 35 Young People Graduate From Pioneering FUSE Programme

The FUSE Programme, a first-of-its-kind initiative by the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Utilities and the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC), has officially graduated its first cohort, lighting the way for skilled youth in T&T.

During the 12-week programme, 35 participants between the ages of 18 and 35 gained specialised training in critical aspects of electrical overhead line construction, maintenance, and line clearing.

The Minister of Public Utilities, Colm Imbert, said programmes like FUSE are important as they equip people with valuable skills, create pathways for continued development, and are essential services.

“We know this sector needs skilled, safety-conscious and prepared workers. It needs people who could respond efficiently in challenging conditions, and based on the rigour of the programme, from what I would have seen, and the experience of the instructors, I have no doubt that you are ready to meet all the requirements.”

T&TEC General Manager, Chrisalston Belle, noted that the two 12-week training courses were intense and physically demanding, especially as some participants had no prior training. He commended their determination and the strides they had made.

“The participants also gained essential life skills including teamwork, discipline, strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and effective communication. So, overall, their resolve and focus have placed them in the best position to achieve their full potential.”

Valedictorian Tama-Re Jackie encouraged young people to firstly believe in themselves and bravely demonstrate their personalities to show the world how outstanding they can be.

“When I got accepted to do this course, I honestly didn’t think I could do it, and it’s the support of my mother and everyone around me that made me feel like I could do something in a male-dominated field. Even the males around me supported me, which was wonderful that they lifted me. They are here today and I just want to say thank you to you all.”

Manager of National Service at the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service, Gachelle Gilkes-Edwards, noted this graduation depicts the dawn of a new era and a celebration of national service in Trinidad and Tobago.
