The Carapo House Transitional Centre was established specifically to support citizens who have fallen on hard times and lost their homes.
Addressing the audience witnessing the opening of the Centre on Tuesday, Minister of Social Development and Family Services Donna Cox said this new facility represents a beacon of hope, bringing opportunities to those without a home.
“Homelessness is a complex and multifaceted issue that affects individuals from all walks of life. In the twinkling of an eye, any one of us gathered here can become homeless. It is a challenge that requires not only immediate relief but also sustainable solutions that would empower those affected to rebuild their lives.”
The Minister explained that the underlying mission for the facility is the transitioning of needy people to stable and independent living.
“Our vision for this transitional facility is rooted in the belief that every person deserves a chance to thrive. Here, residents will have access to a comprehensive suite of services, all designed to address the unique needs of each individual, fostering personal growth and facilitating their journey towards self-sufficiency.”
Permanent Secretary Lenor Baptiste-Simmons gave a bigger picture of the services to be offered by the new facility: “The services available within these wards include comprehensive skills development programmes that equip residents with the tools needed for economic independence. These are complemented by psychosocial support that nurtures emotional well-being and builds resilience. Each service has been carefully integrated to meet the full range of needs presented by those who will eventually reside here.”
She noted that the benefits to be derived from the Centre go beyond temporary housing and are an investment in long-term resilience, restoring dignity and developing personal capacity for the chosen inhabitants.
