Dockyard workers in Chaguaramas are demanding that their salaries be increased to cope with the rising price of goods and services in the country.
Dozens of workers staged a protest at State-owned Caribbean Dockyard and Engineering Services Limited on Wednesday, saying their last salary increase was back in 2006. The Seamen and Waterfront Workers Union (SWWTU) says they had continued discussions with management on the issue but claims that management stopped talks without reason.
Workers say in addition to being paid below market prices, they also have to cope with major health and safety issues in the workplace. But with the rising cost of living they are urging Government to step in.
Over 100 dockyard workers are affected and say they intend to continue their demonstration until management steps in.
