The Seed Bank is working to better the soil on which they plant, and also to encourage people to engage in agriculture.
This week, that organisation invited citizens to reap bodi at a greatly-reduced rate at Tucker Valley, Chaguaramas. Acting Deputy Director of the Seed Bank, Nyasha Akiibua Granger, explains one of the main reasons for planting bodi.
“Green manuring” is an ancient practice of turning soil into undecomposed green plant tissue. It works to add organic matter to the soil. Ms. Granger says after the bodi is completely harvested, they will plant corn which will benefit from the new soil composition. Ms. Granger says that usually during this kind of exercise advice on growing is also disseminated.
The public greatly appreciated the programme with one of the beneficiaries, Ms. Linda Burkett. saying that good food is important to her.
