The Central Statistical Office under the Ministry of Planning and Development has hired additional staff on contract to coordinate the collection of social statistics, particularly data relating to the Ministry’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Responding to a question in the Senate on Friday, Acting Leader of Government Business Paula Gopee-Scoon said in the short to medium term, the organisation is working with the Public Service Commission to provide additional human resource support at the professional level.
Mrs. Gopee-Scoon added that field officers have been hired to provide more timely data, and that employees will be trained to carry out their duties.
Mrs. Gopee-Scoon, who is also the Minister of Trade and Industry, said the Central Statistical Office’s organisational chart makes provision for 351 members of staff. At present, there are 256 permanent officers and 91 contracted employees.
