According to a United Nations Population Fund, Gender Based Violence in the Caribbean region is rising.
This as the organization and the Caribbean Community are hosting a conference on providing much needed services to women and girls in the region.
Director of the UNFPA office in the Caribbean, Alison Drayton, says globally, one in four women report that they have experienced gender based violence. She adds that a survey in six countries in the region shows one in three women in the Caribbean report they have been victims.
Ms. Drayton adds that in Guyana the numbers are even higher with 50% of women indicating they have been victims of gender based violence.
The conference, which is being held at the Hyatt Regency, started on Monday and will end on Wednesday.
