Special Olympian Among 15 Displaced After Fire At Princes Town Apartment Complex

Special Olympian Darrius Gookool is among 15 people who are now displaced after a fire destroyed an apartment complex in Princes Town.

The fire broke out at the two-storey building, which houses four apartments, on Wednesday morning.

Darrius’ mother, Aruna Mohammed, says she smelt smoke and thought it was a bush fire. She had to run to rescue Darrius, who is hearing impaired. Ms. Mohammed is thankful that the occupants of the four apartments were able to escape unhurt, however most of their possessions went up in flames.

Darrius represented Trinidad and Tobago at the Special Olympics in Floor Hockey and Track and Field.

The family spent the night at a neighbour’s home on Wednesday. Anyone willing to assist can contact them at 799-1885.
