SWMCOL: T&T’s Landfills Oversubscribed, Urgent Need To Deal With Waste

There is an urgent need to deal with the country’s garbage.

Chair of Solid Waste Management Company (SWMCOL), Ronald Milford, explained to the Joint Select Committee on Thursday that all the landfill sites in Trinidad are oversubscribed. He says that something must be done immediately to deal with the problem as hazardous conditions can arise which are not easy to deal with, such as fires.

An engineered landfill allows final disposal of solid waste in a secure manner by minimizing the impacts on the environment. We do not have one as yet but Mr. Milford says all is not lost.

SWMCOL’s CEO, Kevin Thompson, says the sites should have been closed at least 10 years ago. He says legislation to bring about change will go to Parliament this year. He says however, it is imperative that the population come on board for a robust recycling plan to change habits and thus the ways in which we deal with waste.
