A new, rational and sustainable approach to Tobago’s State land distribution for agriculture is needed.
During a Tobago Farmers and Agro-Processors Consultation hosted by the Tobago House of Assembly, Technical Officer Karl Murray noted that the THA owns just over 35% of land in Tobago. He said though land has been distributed over the years, that has not translated into sustainable agricultural production, as 80% of what Tobagonians eat is imported from Trinidad.
Over 1,200 applications are lodged at the Division of Food Security. However, Mr. Murray said there is not enough land to supply all interested persons. He said the process has not been efficient, therefore greater monitoring and evaluation will take place.
