A businessman is expected to appear before a Chaguanas Magistrate today, charged with receiving stolen items belonging to the Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT).
Sumit Chadha, 32, of Chaguanas, was charged with the offence on Thursday 4th August, 2022, after being arrested at his Cunupia business place on Wednesday 3rd August, 2022.
This follows an intensive police investigation into the report of a quantity of iron materials being stolen from the MOWT compound in Caroni during the period Friday 29th July, 2022 and Tuesday 2nd August, 2022.
Based on information received, officers proceeded to a scrap iron business in the Cunupia district, where they successfully recovered the stolen materials on Wednesday 3rd August, 2022.
The accused and one other person were arrested in connection with the matter.
Meanwhile, investigations are continuing following the arrest of three persons in two separate incidents on Wednesday for larceny of Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) utility cables.
In the first incident, officers of the Arouca Police Station arrested two men who tried to escape in a gold Nissan Tiida. Reports state that at around 2:30am, officers observed several lengths of cable lying in a grassy area at Cazabon Drive, Trincity. On reaching Cane Farm Road, they noticed a man acting suspiciously. He tried to escape and was subsequently arrested.
In the second incident, a 29 year old San Fernando man was arrested after investigations by officers of the St. Joseph Police Station. Officers observed a group of men transferring cables from one vehicle into another. Upon seeing the officers, the men attempted to escape, but one of the vehicles was intercepted in the Mt. Hope district. A quantity of cables was found in the vehicle.
