UWI Mourns Loss Of Activist Hazel Brown

Tributes have begun to pour in for activist Hazel Brown who championed women’s rights and social justice.

News of her passing came on Thursday morning and TTT News understands she passed away at her home at the age of 80.

Campus Principal of the U.W.I. St Augustine Campus, Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine, noted that Ms. Brown pioneered the movement to encourage and develop women politicians so that their voices could be heard.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Institute of Gender and Development Studies, Dr. Sue-Ann Barratt, described her as an inspiring feminist fighter and advocate for gender equity and justice, noting that she did not shy away from mentoring other women.

Ms. Brown was conferred a Honorary Doctor of Laws by the U.W.I. St Augustine Campus at its 2017 graduation ceremony. In 2011, she was also among the first to receive the Trinidad and Tobago Medal (Gold) for the Development of Women.
