Electoral College Meets In January 2023 To Elect New President

This country’s Electoral College will meet in January to elect the next President of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Notice put out in the Trinidad and Tobago Gazette says the Electoral College, established under Section 28 of the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, will meet on Friday January 20th.

President Paula-Mae Weekes, T&T’s 6th President and first female President, was sworn into office in March 2018, which means her five-year term will soon end. In 2018, President Weekes was the only candidate nominated and was deemed elected without the need for a vote.

The Notice signed by Speaker of the House of Representatives Brigid Annisette-George reaffirmed that a candidate for President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago must be nominated for election by a nomination paper which:

(a) is signed by the candidate and by twelve (12) or more Members of the House of Representatives; and (b) is delivered to the Speaker at least seven (7) days before the election.

A consultation between Government and Opposition usually takes place before nomination of candidates.
