AG : Integrity Of Judiciary Not Affected

The Attorney General says he’s satisfied that National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds did not impugn the integrity of the Judiciary, following a statement made during a televised address on Monday.

In his statement, Minister Hinds touched on the judgment of the High Court in the Brent Thomas matter, saying ‘criminals have friends everywhere in this country’.

Attorney General Reginald Armour said this statement could be interpreted to impact the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago and has given rise to print reports, but said it was not the intention of the Minister to impugn the Judiciary’s integrity in any way.

He added that the Minister, like all members of Government, has a healthy respect for the integrity and exceptional competence of the Judiciary, a fact which is recorded as Government seeks support from the Opposition to make the Caribbean Court of Justice the final Court of Appeal.
