Scrap Iron Dealers Request Meeting With Minister

Lengthy process times for export licences and an absence of Inspectors remain among the concerns of scrap iron dealers.

On Thursday, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association (TTSIDA), Allan Ferguson, complained that export licences are given for a short period, adding that there is a long waiting period when persons reapply for licences.

Mr. Ferguson said a letter was submitted to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, requesting a sit-down with officials to address the theft and other issues within the industry. The Ministry of Trade and Industry has confirmed that the letter was received, and a meeting with the Association will be arranged to discuss the issues addressed.

To date, eight scrap metal inspectors have undergone a rigorous training programme and will be equipped and out on scrap metal sites from Monday May 15, 2023 to perform their duties in accordance with the Scrap Metal Act, 2022.

The Scrap Metal Industry reopened on February 24th, 2023.
