Human Impacts Of Autonomous Weapons In The Region

The Caribbean Community Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS) believes the region needs to build a shared understanding of the implications of Autonomous Weapon Systems (AWS).

Its Executive Director, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Jones, said these systems which can identify, select, and attack targets without human control pose ethical, legal, and humanitarian concerns. He noted this will affect the way we police communities, secure our borders, and fight wars in the future, and believes the region needs to have a united voice on this issue.

Meanwhile, National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds noted the “inherent danger” posed by such weapons, especially in the wrong hands.

They were speaking at the Opening Ceremony of a CARICOM IMPACS Conference on the Human Impacts of Autonomous Weapons being held at the Hyatt.
