Key Points From the Ministry of Health’s Virtual Media Conference – Monday 22nd November 2021

  • Principal Medical Officer of Institutions, Dr. Maryam Abdool-Richards, stated that as of this morning, 539 persons are hospitalized with COVID-19 and 91.7% of hospitalizations are unvaccinated patients.
  • Dr. Richards also announced that currently, there are 2 pediatric cases hospitalized with COVID-19, one of which is admitted in the ICU.
  • Dr. Richards indicated that the current ICU capacity stands at 88% in Trinidad and 71% in Tobago, after efforts taken by the Ministry of Health to increase the number of beds and ventilators available for Intensive Care. However, on any given day 11-44% of patients require ICU care and the demand is increasing.
  • Dr. Richards advised persons ill with COVID-19 to seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY upon experiencing severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing and chest pain, as many patients are delaying transfer to Hospital until it is too late.
