Shark Awareness Seminar

A shark awareness seminar was held for various stakeholders just over month after an English tourist was attacked and severely injured by a shark in Tobago.

Earlier this week, the Environmental Research Institute (ERIC) and the Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development hosted a Shark Awareness Seminar at the Shaw Park Complex.

In a release, the Division informed attendees included fishing association representatives, fisheries data collectors, and reef patrol officers. It focused on shark biology, behavior, and the current status of shark populations in the North-East Tobago UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve.

The recent incident was also discussed as facilitators highlighted the need for increased awareness and support for the implementation and enforcement of Tobago’s Shark Management Plan. The seminar was hosted in commemoration of World Ocean Day.
