West Indies Defeat Afghanistan

The West Indies men closed off their Group stage leg of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a statement sending victory when they defeated Afghanistan by 104 runs last evening.

Batting first on a good batting track at the Darren Sammy Stadium in St. Lucia, the Windies had a powerful start getting to 100 runs within seven overs. Nicholas Pooran was key in setting a giant total, getting his highest T20 International score of 98 from 53 balls, before being run out attempting to get his century. Johnson Charles offered assistance with a rapid 43 from 27 balls. They eventually closed their innings on 218 for 5 from their 20 overs.

Needing more than 10 runs per over for victory, the visitors were put under pressure from the onset by Akeal Hosein who grabbed 2 wickets for 21 runs and Gudakesh Motie 2 for 28. But it was Obed Mcoy who topped the bowling chart, registering 3 wickets for 14 runs.

The Windies’ fielding effort was also noteworthy, as they bundled out Afghanistan for 114 in 16.2 overs, winning by 104 runs.

The Caribbean side now finishes the preliminary round, topping group C on eight points. The attention now turns to the Super 8s, where they clash with England on Wednesday.
