The Trinidad & Tobago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, TTSPCA is not in a position to manage the humane capture and care of cats at the Caroni Swamp, due to its already overburdened capacity and limited resources.
The TTSPCA in a media release notes that any removal of the cats should be conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, overseen by Ministry Veterinarians, using humane methods such as re-homing and humane euthanasia.
The TTSPCA is suggesting that all involved parties such as feeders, tour operators, Ministry Veterinarians, and tourism officials convene to discuss and establish a humane path forward for the cats.
The Organsiation points out that various groups and individuals feed the cats, while, many cats have been spayed or neutered, with some being re-homed successfully.
Earlier this week the Trinidad and Tobago Incoming Tour Operators Association called on the Ministry of Tourism and the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) to intervene in the feral cat infestation at the Caroni Swamp.
The Association says data indicates that between 200-300 cats are rapidly multiplying and destroying native wildlife at an alarming rate at the site.
