For the past five weeks, members of the Port of Spain City Corporation Clean-Up team have been hard at work removing bulk waste and white waste from homes throughout the city.
According to Councillor Nicole Young, Deputy Chair of the Public Health Committee, the support has been tremendous with residents taking full advantage of the campaign by removing old appliances, furniture, and other miscellaneous items from their homes.
The campaign is focussed on engaging the community in maintaining a clean and healthy Port of Spain.
Speaking during an interview at Talk City 91.1FM on the initiative, Port of Spain Mayor Chinua Alleyne said the timing of the clean-up coincides with the end of year cleaning for the Christmas and New Year.
The team split their time over the 12 burgesses randomly selecting two districts per weekend. This weekend, December 21st and 22nd, will be the final two days with the teams in Belmont East and St. Ann’s River North from 7am to 4pm.
The Mayor explained that the campaign is more than just encouraging beautiful aesthetics, but a means of flood mitigation as well.
The Mayor said preserving the beauty and cleanliness of the city is of utmost importance and revealed plans for another city clean-up in early 2025.
