Police Commit To Tackling Home Invasions

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is promising to tackle the issue of home invasions.

Speaking to journalists in Port of Spain on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Junior Benjamin, said the TTPS is working on strategies to ensure the criminals are brought to justice.

“It is important to understand that these home invasions are not just done by new persons. It is about repeat offenders that are doing it. We have to continue to do our job by looking at the repeat offenders. We also recognise that in some cases, it might be gang-related and where those situations are concerned, we are looking at using the Gang Unit to help us. But all in all, we are looking at all the different options that could contribute to those home invasions. We are hoping even as we continue that we will get to the bottom of it. At the end of the day, whatever is the situation, I think what we really need as the Police Service is effective intelligence, holistic investigations, and at the end of the day, active collaboration with the public and with our internal and external stakeholders. We are going to work on that even as we seek to address all these crime situations.”

Seen wearing a bodycam for use by the Police Service, DCP Benjamin said he was leading by example.

“I personally asked to have one, because that’s the thing. We have those things, and it is there for, again, the officers on the ground, the frontline officers. They are the ones that are outside. Ever so often, First Division Officers, we come outside, so I make sure and just ask for one, but I’m saying it’s the frontline officers that we need to ensure that have. We are working on that whole idea of the body cam, but at the end of the day, we’re saying that it is part of the tool that we use, and therefore, we are saying that in the future, this should be the sight that you should be looking for, for all police officers.”
