$550,000 In Self Help Grants Distributed

The Ministry of Sport and Community Development, through the National Commission for Self Help Limited, distributed $550,000 in Grants to recipients from Laventille East/Morvant.

Member of Parliament for Laventille East/Morvant and Minister in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Adrian Leonce, urged the Self Help Grant recipients to ensure that the funds are used effectively to meet their needs.

“If there are any changes to be made, contact the Commission for Self-Help because I know a lot of times we wait on Grants. Sometimes it’s an emergency, and the Grants process takes a little while, so you end up digging in your cacada and do your little thing, and then the money comes now and you want to do something a little different, which is fine. Just ensure that the documentation reflects that.”

Some of the recipients shared that they were grateful to receive the Grants.

“The need on my end that the Grant helps with is for me to be able to repair my kitchen and my bathroom. It shifted with the earthquake and the underneath begin to fall, so that is a great help.”

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Sport and Community Development, Deputy Permanent Secretary Florette Clarke said the Commission is committed to promoting resilience and self-sufficiency.

One Emergency Repair Reconstruction Assistance Grant and fourteen Minor Repair and Reconstruction Grants were distributed.
