A call is being made by the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) for regional law enforcement to take investigations of crimes against journalists seriously.
In a statement on the UN’s International Day To End Impunity For Crimes Against Journalists, the Association noted that “Latin American and the Caribbean remains one of the deadliest places to be a journalist.”
It said according to a UNESCO report, 69 media workers have been killed in the region in 10 countries since 2022.
The ACM noted several instances around the region including Jamaica in September, where a gunman fired several shots at the office of Nationwide News Network, and a similar situation at a media house in Suriname in October.
In both instances, it said no arrests have been made in either attack.
The ACM reiterated its call to bring the perpetrators of such crimes to justice, urging law enforcement officials to ensure no stone is left unturned.
