Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin completed a successful two-day visit to Tobago this past week.
Born and raised on the island, the acting CoP’s first visit in his new role saw him return “home” and meet with several stakeholders and interest groups. Among them was the Chief Secretary, Farley Augustine, Minority Leader, Kelvon Morris, Chairman of the Tobago Business Chamber, Martin George as well as members of the Tobago arm of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Tobago Hoteliers Association.
The Chief Secretary expressed his appreciation for the CoP making Tobago his first stop to meet with stakeholders and to discuss matters of mutual interest. In his discussions with the stakeholder’s, Commissioner Benjamin reassured them that the TTPS has a tripartite approach to dealing with criminal activity. This includes crime prevention through various community programmes and structures such as the Police Youth Clubs, crime suppression through intelligence led policing and crime intervention through our support units like the Victim and Witness Support Unit. Mr. Benjamin re-emphasised his commitment to working closely with stakeholders to reduce the incidence of crime.
Acting Commissioner Benjamin also took the time to address officers within the Tobago Division. Reinforcing his commitment to support officers and supply everything needed to get the job done, he also reiterated his call for officers to show their commitment to service, by delivering creating a welcoming environment for the public
Not to be left out, the Acting CoP included two of his alma maters, Scarborough Methodist Primary School and the Signal Hill Secondary School during his visit. The teachers at both institutions expressed overwhelming pride at one of their past students taking up a position in one of the country’s highest offices. The staff and young students at each school treated Ag. Commissioner Benjamin to a special programme and were proud to engage him by sharing their desires about one day becoming officers. He encouraged them to keep an awesome attitude despite setbacks and they would accomplish their dreams.
