At Least 90 Cases Of Child Labour Reported In T&T

An estimated 90 cases of child labour have been reported across the country. This is according to Chief Labour Inspector Specialist Farouk Mohammed.

Speaking on TTT’s Now Morning Show on Wednesday, Mr. Mohammed said the Inspectorate will investigate 34 of those suspected cases as they have received specific information related to the reports.

Psychologist at the Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago, Ahhalia Ramdass, said child labour undermines the basic right of a child, as it dives into the realm of exploitation. She said child labour puts undue stress on the child, and will have a very serious impact on their later life.

Mr. Mohammed said based on the assessment of the reported cases, the child may be removed from the labour environment. He added that the family may also be referred to the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services for additional assistance.
