Belmont Church Vandalised

Two men have been detained for vandalising the Pastoral Centre at the St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Belmont. The act caught on CCTV shows a man dressed in a yellow robe, holding a flag, walking onto the compound of the church in Belmont.

The man walks towards the Pastoral centre, his actions are blocked from the view of the security camera. According to an eyewitness, the suspect damaged window panes with the rod from the flag. The suspect walks back into the view of the camera and is seen climbing into the grotto where he destroys plants and a statue. He is then joined by another person dressed in red and white, clutching a large book, they both exited the compound.

A report of the crime was made to the Belmont Police Station. Officers subsequently detained the two suspects, wearing the same robes seen in the CCTV video. The St. Francis RC Church in Belmont, a National Trust Heritage Site is currently being restored. The observance of its 120th anniversary will take place in May 2022.
