Bishop Anstey Victorious In CSO Secondary Schools Statistics Day Quiz

Bishop Anstey High School emerged victorious in the first Secondary Schools Statistics Day Quiz hosted by the Central Statistical Office. ASJA Girls College, Tunapuna, and Fatima College placed second and third respectively. The CSO received 419 entries from 36 Schools nationwide in response to the Quiz that ran from October 14th to 26th. In attendance at the prize giving ceremony at Bishop Anstey High School today, Planning and Development Minister Pennelope Beckles extended her congratulations to all schools and students who participated in the initiative.

The Central Statistical Office (CSO), in its role as the official disseminator of socio-economic data on Trinidad and Tobago hosted the Quiz as part of its Stakeholder Engagement activities which include presentations, seminars, workshops and statistical education. The CSO has always recognized the importance of building an appreciation of data and data usage in students and has hosted several schools over the years in activities related to the commemoration of Caribbean Statistics Day, which is celebrated on October 15th each year.  World Statistics Day is commemorated every five years and was observed on 20th October 2022.

The CSO is cognizant of the importance of engendering data usage from an early age.  Students at the CSEC and CAPE Levels are required to complete School Based Assessments and Internal Assessments as part of their preparations for exams.  Several students approach the CSO on an annual basis for assistance in the provision of data to complete these assignments.

Minister Beckles expressed her hope that the Quiz served to demonstrate to students the wealth of data available to them via the CSO’s website, the uses of such data, how data is tied to their areas of study and the potential for a career in statistics.

The Minister also extended her thanks to the kind sponsors and partners in this venture who supported the CSO by way of monetary prizes, products and advertising, namely, the Ministry of Education, The American Chamber of Commerce Trinidad and Tobago (AMCHAMTT), Bermudez Biscuits, VEMCO Ltd., Hand Arnold Trinidad Limited, Shine Distributors Limited, Caribbean Bottlers (Trinidad & Tobago) Limited, Daphne Bartlett Cosmetics and TikTok creator Mr. Stephon Felmine.
