The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and leaders in the region have congratulated UNC Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar on her victory in Monday’s General Election.
In its message, CARICOM congratulated the people of Trinidad and Tobago on the peaceful exercise of their democratic rights, saying, “The decisive victory is a clear mandate from the people of Trinidad and Tobago as the country continues its forward journey. We look forward to welcoming Prime Minister-elect Persad-Bissessar to the Conference of Heads of Government, and to her participation, as we continue to tackle emerging geopolitical issues, and seek to further improve the welfare and well-being of the people of the Region.”
The Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, was among the first to extend her own greetings to the incoming Prime Minister.
“We also warmly congratulate the people of Trinidad and Tobago on the peaceful exercise of their democratic rights. In a world where democracy is often tested, Trinidad and Tobago has shown that true strength lies in the commitment of its people to participation, fairness, and free expression. May your democracy continue to grow, deepen, and inspire generations to come.”
Guyana’s President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali also congratulated the Prime Minister-Elect, noting the strong friendship between both countries.
“Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago share a strong friendship, both at the bilateral level and within CARICOM. I, therefore, look forward to our continued collaboration to strengthen our relations and work towards our shared goals of advancing regional integration, economic development and the well-being of the people our region.”
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the UNC’s success at the polls is an indication of the confidence of the people of Trinidad and Tobago in her leadership.
“We look forward to working together in the spirit of partnership and shared purpose, for the benefit of our peoples and the wider Caribbean region… Prime Minister-elect Persad-Bissesser‘s electoral triumph heralds a renewed opportunity to deepen and broaden our collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including, but not limited to, trade and investment, regional security, energy and climate change.”
Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew, joined his CARICOM counterparts in extending congratulations to Mrs. Persad-Bissessar on her election as Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
He stated, “Saint Kitts and Nevis looks forward to continuing to work with our sister CARICOM nation to deepen the bonds of partnership and cooperation as we pursue the collective aspirations we share for a resilient and prosperous Caribbean.”
UK Minister of International Development for Latin America and Caribbean, Baroness Chapman, congratulated the Prime Minister-Elect on her “resounding win” in Monday’s General Election.
“Congratulations to Prime Minister-elect of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar, on your election victory. The United Kingdom looks forward to building on our enduring friendship and partnership.”
Congratulations also came in from the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, who wrote on X: “Heartiest congratulations @MPKamla on your victory in the elections. We cherish our historically close and familial ties with Trinidad and Tobago. I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our partnership for shared prosperity and well-being of our people.”
