Citizens Reminded To Be Proactive, Protect Themselves From Mosquito Bites

The Ministry of Health is reminding citizens that they need to take the necessary steps to prevent contracting Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika.

These mosquito-borne diseases are transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito which generally bite between dusk to dawn hours – 6am to 6pm.

Pregnant women in particular are urged to take greater precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites due to the harmful effects of the Zika virus which can cause low birth weight, premature birth and or foetal abnormalities.

To prevent mosquito bites, it is recommended that you wear long-sleeved, loose-fitting and light coloured clothing when possible, and apply mosquito repellant with the active ingredient DEET.

People are also urged to reduce mosquito breeding grounds within flower pot saucers, vases, tyres, buckets, barrels and water storage containers by regularly cleaning, turning over or, removing them.
