Even as countries are witnessing a slight increase in the number COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations, this is not the case in Trinidad and Tobago.
This from Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh. He was responding to questions on the new variants, EG.5 and FL.1.51, which have caused a spike in cases in other countries like the United States of America.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the EG.5 a variant of concern on August 9th. EG.5, is a sublineage of the Omicron Variant of Concern (VOC). Two cases of the variant were detected in T&T, first on June 29th and then on July 13th.
The Health Minister said there are approximately 35 people currently hospitalised with COVID-19 at the San Fernando General Hospital, Couva Hospital, and the Caura Hospital mainly with incidental COVID.
