A development engineer based at the UWI St. Augustine Campus, Jainarine Bansee, is urging home owners to have a cultural shift with regards to ensuring proper standards are enforced for installation and maintenance of their driveway gates.
Speaking at a webinar hosted by the T&T Bureau of Standards, it was pointed out that there are currently no regulations for driveway gate construction and installation.
According to a study by the UWI, there were 10 fatalities between 2011 and 2016 due to gate accidents, with several recent incidents in 2022.
Mr. Bansee said although there have been discussions with Government Agencies to implement a policy or regulation on gate safety, he is urging the population to ensure their own safety.
