DPP Discontinues Corruption Case Against Pandays

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard, SC, has discontinued the corruption case against former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday, his wife Oma Panday, businessman Ishwar Galbaransingh and former government Minister Carlos John.

On Monday when the matter was expected to go to trial Mr. Gaspard, instead, explained his decision to discontinue the 17-year-old case, following a preliminary inquiry which began in 2006.

He said several key witnesses are unavailable. He also questioned whether or not in the circumstances, to prosecute this matter, or in the prosecution of this matter there will be a fair prospect of conviction.
