Families Affected By Crime Get Tokens From The TTPS

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service delivered tokens of hope and kindness to scores of families that have been affected by crime over the last twelve months.

Christmas Kindness 2024, an annual project of the TTPS Victim and Witness Support Unit, was held at the Belmont Community Centre.

Head of the Social Support Services Unit of the TTPS, Aisha Corbie, said for every Quarter for 2024, 1,020 new crime victims have walked into the Unit for support. The Unit provides counselling and advice to victims.

“What we found is that crime victims, around Christmas time, it can be a very triggering season because of the persons that would have been lost during the year, and also because of the trauma persons would have encountered because of a crime situation during the year.”

Ms. Corbie advises crime victims to spend more time with family and friends at this time of the year as it would be better not to be alone.

“This year the Victim and Witness Support Unit provided support to 3,577 crime victims throughout all the ten Divisions and the Police Service, through the Victim and Witness Support Unit, with this initiative, we would have provided hampers to at least 140 families.”

The Victim and Witness Support Unit was first established in 2008 but only started distributing Christmas hampers about five year ago.
