Three women and two men are this year’s Laureates of the Anthony N Sabga Awards.
Professor of Molecular Genetics and Virology at the University of the West Indies, Professor Christine Carrington, was one of the three women, and won the award for Science and Technology. The Virologist rose to prominence during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic as one of the leading authorities on the evolution of the virus and molecular epidemiology. Programme Director of the Awards, Maria Superville-Neilson, acknowledged Professor Carrington as a leading virologist who is respected regionally and globally.
On Thursday, Mrs. Superville-Neilson said the winner from Suriname, Digital Entrepreneur, Anushka Sonai, was the first winner from the island. Ms. Sonai won the joint ‘Public and Civic Contributions Award’ alongside Barbadian Medical Philanthropist, Dr. Kim Jebodhsingh.
Meanwhile, Environmental Consultant Shyam Nokta from Guyana won the Award in the Entrepreneurship category and Jamaican author Marlon James won in the Arts and Letters category.
The Awardees were given a monetary prize of TT$500,000, a medal and citation, and will receive their awards at ceremonies held in their own countries.
With the addition of the new awardees, there are now a total of 54 Laureates.
A total of TT$23.5 million have been awarded since the programme began 17 years ago.
