Former NCIC President Passes On

Former President of the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC), Deokinanan Sharma has passed away.

This was confirmed by First Vice President of the NCIC, Surujdeo Mangaroo, who said Mr Sharma’s dedication to the promotion and preservation of Indian culture in Trinidad has left an indelible mark.

TTT News understands that Mr Sharma died earlier today, Friday, after ailing for some time. At the opening of the Divali Nagar in 2022, Mr Sharma then at the age of 85 announced that he was stepping down as Head of the NCIC, noting that his health was slowly failing.

Mr Sharma was at the helm of the NCIC for 22 years and continued to ensure the Council’s most renowned event, the annual nine night Divali Nagar, showcased East Indian culture. He was succeeded by Senator Deoroop Teemal as President of the NCIC in 2023.
