Generator Trips The Cause Of Friday’s Power Outage

Approximately 100,000 customers of the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission lost power for approximately 35 minutes on Friday morning.

Minister of Public Utilities, Marvin Gonzales, responded to an Urgent Question on the matter in the House of Representatives. He reported that two of T&TEC’s Independent Power Producers experienced ‘trips’ of their generators.

“Between 6:55am and 7:05am this morning, Trinidad Generation Unlimited, TGU, experienced trips on two of its gas turbines, resulting in a loss of generation of approximately 240 megawatts of power. During the same period, Contour Global Trinity Power experienced a trip on one of its 75 megawatt gas turbines. These generator trips resulted in the initiation of an under-frequency load shedding event.”

Minister Gonzales said all customers were back on supply at 7:45am.
