Gonzales: Time To Reform Police Commissioner Selection Process

National Security Minister Marvin Gonzales believes there is a need to revamp the way a Commissioner of Police is selected, noting that there’s always “bacchanal and political confusion” toward the appointment.

Speaking at a PNM Cottage Meeting in Westmoorings on Tuesday evening, he said this is one of the promises a new People’s National Movement government would address.

“The Prime Minister also spoke about the selection criteria for a Commissioner of Police that we must also examine and I am also looking forward to that in the new government because Trinidad and Tobago is perhaps the only country in the world where the selection of a Commissioner of Police is mired in all kind of bacchanal and political confusion, and this must come to an end because it politicises the management of the Police Service.”

Mr. Gonzales also vowed to continue addressing the issues in the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.

“The formation of elite units within law enforcement agencies is nothing new, as I would have said. But that does not mean to say that the issues in your Police Service do not have to be addressed. We have to look at the management of the TTPS because we had numerous reports speaking towards the management issues in the Police Service, which we must address.”
