Government remains committed to providing the $1,000 Transport Grant to eligible citizens by January.
In the Lower House on Friday, Finance Minister Colm Imbert reminded that the Grant would be available to all persons who receive Social Relief, Public Assistance, Disability and Food Support Grants as well as those in receipt of Senior Citizens’ Pension.
During the Budget Presentation in September, Minister Imbert said this was to ease the burden of the most vulnerable, following the move to reduce the fuel subsidy.
On Friday, he said the Grant recipients are continuously audited by the Ministry of Social Development since the list of recipients changes on a monthly basis due to several factors.
Mr. Imbert said the move would benefit 175,000 people and explained the reasoning behind the month selected for distribution.
