Green Light For Salary Negotiations – The UWI Receives Remit From Education Ministry

The St. Augustine Campus of The University of the West Indies (UWI) says it has the go-ahead from the Ministry of Education to start salary negotiations.

In a statement on Monday afternoon, the Campus expressed appreciation for the honouring of the timeline given six weeks ago. It confirmed that the University’s recognised union, the West Indies Group of University Teachers (WIGUT), has been advised that the remit was received. The Campus is hoping that staff protests will cease as the parties go into negotiations. It is also holding WIGUT to its commitment to submit all outstanding exam papers once the remit is received.

Campus Principal Professor Rose Marie Belle-Antoine thanked WIGUT for the assurances it gave that the exam papers have already been prepared for immediate submission and said as such they do not anticipate any further disruption of the hosting of the semester’s examinations.

According to the statement on Friday night, notices of changed schedules to 31 examinations for which papers were outstanding were issued and that these new dates will stand. Professor Belle-Antoine said the papers now being received will be processed with the same integrity and care that is the norm for the holding of UWI examinations.

She is also hoping for a productive and speedy outcome for all other bargaining units.
