Investigation Launched Following Arrest of Police Commissioner

“The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is committed to transparency and accountability.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin made the statement at a Media Briefing on Friday as she announced that an investigation has been launched following the arrests of Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher and former Strategic Services Agency (SSA) Director Roger Best.

DCP Martin confirmed that they were arrested in connection with the importation of two sniper rifles for the Agency.

“At this time, an active investigation is proceeding, and I must stress that it is still in progress. We are working closely with the Director of Public Prosecutions and the relevant authorities to ensure that due process is followed and that all legal protocols are observed.”

The Commissioner is being investigated for the unlawful procurement of firearms and accessories and misbehaviour in public office.

DCP Martin acknowledged the public’s concern surrounding the arrests and assured that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is committed to transparency while respecting the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

“As this investigation is still ongoing and is at a sensitive stage, we are unable to provide specific details about the nature of the arrest. It is important that we allow the investigation to unfold without interference. I ask you for your understanding and patience as we work to ensure that all aspects of this matter are addressed thoroughly and fairly.”

Deputy Commissioner Martin said all the Commissioner’s constitutional rights will be afforded to her while she is being detained, and additional updates on the matter will be provided to the public as appropriate.

She reassured that the arrest of Commissioner Harewood-Christopher will not affect the operations of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.

“Our officers remain committed to serving and protecting the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago and the Executive, our Assistant Commissioners of Police, are also here with us today, and we will continue to function without disruption. We are fully operational, and the safety and security of the public remain our top priority.”
