Justice Denies Injunction Against Local Government Reform Act

Local government councillors and Aldermen will continue in office for another year, after December 3rd 2022.

That’s the ruling of High Court Judge, Justice Jacqueline Wilson as she denied an injunction by political activist Ravi Balgobin-Maharaj as part of his challenge to the Local Government Reform Act.

On Wednesday, the Justice refused to grant the injunction requested by political activist Ravi Balgobin-Maharaj to prevent the postponement of the local government election .

Passed by a simple majority earlier this year, the act allows local government elections to be delayed by a year, which the government has said it wants to do.

Justice Wilson however said that in Assessing the merits of Balgobin-Maharaj’s main complaint, she agreed there was a serious issue to be tried.
