Thousands of students across Trinidad and Tobago were expected to return to their classrooms on Monday, however, less than 10% of teachers reported for work in Tobago. This is stemming from the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association’s call for teachers to rest and recreate resulting in some schools having to turn students away.
The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association says that since 2015 there have been delays on the part of the office of the Chief Personnel Officer to meet with them and that they have continued to be treated unfairly.
President of the Union, Antonia Tekah De Freitas, says that this day of reflection is not meant only for teachers but also for the country to ponder the value of educators and the value of education to Trinidad and Tobago.
