Minister Imbert Defends Fuel Hike

Minister of Finance, Colm Imbert is defending government’s decision to increase the price of fuel from April 19th.

In a post to his Twitter account, Minister Imbert said “Increases in the price of gas are never easy to absorb.

Referring to an image of a chart comparing fuel prices in the region, Minister Imbert noted that the price of gas in Trinidad and Tobago is the second lowest out of 13 Caribbean countries in 2022.

He said diesel in the USA is currently TT$9.13 per litre, more than twice the price in T&T.

The Opposition, other political parties, some business groups, and economists have all condemned the increase in fuel prices, saying it would result in a hike in the prices of goods and services.
