MOH Outlines Process For Importing Rapid Antigen Test Kits

The Ministry of Health has outlined the process to import Rapid Antigen or Antibody Test Kits into this country.

On Wednesday, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh clarified that those test kits were approved for sale two weeks ago by the Chemistry, Food and Drugs Division. His statement came amid reports that pharmacies were already selling the test kits in their establishments.

The Health Ministry noted today that prior to importing the test kits, an application for a ‘No Objection’ letter along with supporting documents must first be submitted to the Division. It says the application will subsequently be processed to determine compliance with the Food and Drugs Act, following which the applicant will be notified as to whether it has been approved or rejected.

But the Ministry said a ‘No Objection’ status can be amended based on new data and information arising with respect to the safety or quality of the test kit. It also reminded that where a rapid test kit is imported without the relevant approvals, the individual may be liable to a fine and/or imprisonment under the Food and Drugs Act.
