A Private Members Motion aimed at supporting and protecting our nation’s children was brought to the Lower House on Friday.
Opposition Member of Parliament for Princes Town, Barry Padarath, in his contribution, pointed out that many of the institutions housing children are understaffed and underfunded and as a result, many children are neglected and further abused. The Opposition MP said it is time the Government formulates effective, data-driven policy, and pledged that the Opposition will be part of the solution.
In response, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister – Gender and Child Affairs, Ayanna Webster-Roy, denied the Opposition’s claims, noting that the protection and safety of the nation’s children, and the well being of all citizens, are at the forefront of the Government’s agenda.
MP Webster-Roy further noted that policies are in place, with constant assessment to fill in the gaps in the system. She also announced a programme aimed at the protection of migrants.
