Mt. Hope Women’s Hospital Awarded “Baby Friendly” Accreditation

The Mt. Hope Women’s Hospital has been awarded “baby friendly” accreditation.

At the Hospital’s Ceremony to commemorate the accreditation, Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh said while instituting policies like the National Breastfeeding Policy of 2020 are applauded, he said what is more important is implementation.

The baby friendly hospital initiative is an international programme launched by the World Health Organization, Pan American Health Organization, and The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund to promote optimal care for mothers and babies by promoting the ten steps for successful breastfeeding.

PAHO/WHO representative Dr. Erica Wheeler said the early initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour after birth is what is recommended to provide the greatest chance to establish and maintain breastfeeding.
