The North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) has made a significant impact in eye care by performing 300 successful cataract surgeries at the Couva Medical and Multi Training Facility.
The surgeries, conducted under an optimised surgical schedule, were carried out by a dedicated team led by Dr. Shehenaz Mohammed, the lead and sole surgeon.
The Couva Medical and Multi Training Facility’s cataract surgery initiative achieved an impressive 100% success rate with no complications.
Conducted on weekends through a scheduled system, the programme is designed to reduce the backlog of cataract surgeries in the public healthcare system, enabling patients to receive timely care.
This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Health’s efforts to address the growing demand for essential healthcare services in Trinidad and Tobago, aiming to reduce cataract-related blindness and improve access to life-changing treatments.
NCRHA CEO, Davlin Thomas, expressed his satisfaction with the milestone and commended the effort of staff involved on the project.
