Eighteen children had to be relocated from a Child Support Centre after a fire broke out at an establishment in Northern Trinidad early Thursday morning.
A release from the Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago revealed that quick response by caregivers and security officers on duty led to the immediate evacuation of all the children. There are no reports of any injuries.
According to reports, a 17 year old girl reportedly started the fire after she pulled out some exposed electrical wiring, which caused sparks and started the blaze around 1:30am. The girl is currently in police custody.
The Authority has maintained that the fire is of an “unknown origin.”
It said the top floor of the two-storey building which housed the children was damaged.
The families of the children were notified of the situation and counselling support will also be provided to them.
