Penal now has a $4.4 million transitional home.
Launched by the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, the Penal Transitional Centre will be able to accommodate 40 individuals affected by natural disasters such as flooding, earthquakes, landslides, and more.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, Lenor Baptiste-Simmons, said the Centre contains basic amenities, allowing individuals temporary living spaces in their time of need.
“The Ministry has repurposed this space into what you see today. Six fully furnished apartments equipped with modern amenities, comprehensive security systems, and, above all, the capacity to safeguard families during their most vulnerable moments.”
According to Chairman of Heritage Petroleum Company Limited, Michael Quamina SC, the refurbished building was provided by Heritage Petroleum in 2022 as part of its effort towards effecting change.
“As part of the refinancing in 2022 of Trinidad Petroleum Holding Limited and by extension Heritage Petroleum Company Limited, we secured the release from the lenders of direct and indirect liens on Petrotrin’s properties and Heritage’s non-operational assets. All of which were previously pledged to the legacy debt. This enabled us to repurpose these properties accordingly, thus we ware able to hand over this multi-storey building at Clarke Road, Penal.”
Minister of Social Development and Family Services Donna Cox described the home as a step towards finding solutions to address unwarranted challenges faced by citizens.
“This Centre will ensure that families who have experienced forced displacements for whatever reason have a temporary safe haven where they can receive not only shelter but they can also receive psycho-social support, training, and assistance in finding long-term solutions to their challenges. This facility is a place of hope and renewal designed to transform lives and empower families.”
Minister Cox said more facilities like this will be established nationwide with a focus on disaster-prone areas. She encouraged companies to emulate Heritage Petroleum’s example and partner in delivering impactful services to citizens.
